And the “stairs” in the bathroom are so that you can showcase your tchotchkes and dust-collectors. Or, practicality-wise, you have a place to put your assorted face- , bathing- and hair-care needs. No, really, whoever designed/put in the stairs was out to lunch – that’s my verdict. As the saying goes, “Why????” (this is to be said in a nasally, whiny tone of voice)
This is for the rich cats, they don’t have to jump on/off the counter like the poor cats do, they ascend and descend in a very elegant fashion.
