My sister sent me this gorgeous pic of our mom’s house in the winter sunshine. I smiled at the fruits on the tree to the left. When I was about 6 years old, I believed that fairies grew inside those pods. It is the last time I truly truly believed something. I kept one of them wrapped up in a baby’s blanket, waiting for the fairy to hatch.
My mom also has cycads in her garden. They are protected in South Africa and the one to the bottom right of the photograph is very very rare. At one point there were five or so government officials in the garden examining it. You need a permit to buy, transport, or trade cycads. Of South Africa’s 38 indigenous cycad species, several are extinct in the wild.
It’s gherkin time! Every year at this time, my husband pickles about twice this amount. He then munches on them throughout the year
I found a trove of English-language Elmore Leonard books at the local thrift store, plus one Carl Hiaasen. These cost $10
We went for a ride on a really hot day (finally) and ended up at a really nice café in the countryside
It is called The Nut House and also had an art gallery and a shop
On the 15th, Harley had been with us for exactly four years. This was his first night with us. He was my birthday gift in 2021.
Someone sent me a photograph and asked me what this was because they thought I was old enough to remember. They saw something similar in a public toilet thought it was something…phallic. Luckily I remembered seeing something like this in Europe many years ago. It is soap and a clever idea because the soap stays dry and doesn’t end up in a slimy puddle on the sink.
I have tried something like this in the past, but the magnet did not work that well.
