When Facebook and Instagram went down a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised at how many times I absently clicked on the Facebook app while watching television or waiting for the kettle to boil.
Since then I have markedly cut back on time on social media. I hardly ever use use Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat or Tiktok, but I do keep in touch with South African family and friends on Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp. I now try to check Facebook and WhatsApp once in the morning and once in the evening.
