A perfume that has no smell?

When I read about Molecule 01 (£72 for a 100ml bottle), a perfume that does not have a smell, I immediately thought of the Emperor’s New Clothes*.

I often think of the Emperor’s New Clothes when I see hideous fashions and humongously overpriced tat sold as ‘high fashion’…like the Balengiaca ‘IKEA bag’

or the Celine plastic bag – priced at about $800

Well, when I recently read about Escentric Molecules Molecule 01, a perfume with no smell, I thought it sounded ridiculous. It is the fastest-selling perfume of all time at Harvey Nichols London. I guess the hype of having no smell has boosted sales somewhat.

Apparently it is a single chemical which boosts other smells, so when it comes into contact with pheromones on the skin, it produces a scent unique to each person – which the wearer themselves often cannot detect.
