The kodkod

Kodkod/Gato Huiña (Leopardus guigna)/The Huiña Cat is the smallest feline in the Americas and one of the smallest in the world. It measures 39 to 48 cm long, plus 20 to 25 cm at the tail, and 42 to 51 cm high at the withers. Its weight is around 2 to 3 kg.

This little cat lives exclusively in the southern part of the coastal Andes, between 1,900 to 2,500 meters above sea level.

This tiny cat is one of the most accomplished climbers in the world. Not only can it climb trees with trunks too big for any other cat to get a solid grip, it spends its entire youth in the treetops. The females nest in trees, and the kittens spend their infancy clambering around their treetop nests. Isn’t that amazing?

And below is a melanistic kodkod
