Galen leather notebook, pencase/notebook holder, and fountain pens

I was an early adopter of traveler’s notebooks.  In the beginning there was almost nothing to choose from if you did not want the basic brown and black covers made by what was then Midori, now Traveler’s Company.

I stumbled across Galen leather when searching for something more colourful, with stitching. I think I originally found them via Etsy and then moved over to communicating with Fikret Zeynep via the website, Galen Leather.

Zeynep was amazing. She was so passionate and inspirational. Always ready to talk even if you were not going to make a purchase. From the beginning she made you feel like a friend. It was a family company and she really did make you feel like party of their circle. She replied instantly to any communication and her messages used to make my day brighter. It was only much later than I found out her story (here), and that made me admire her even more.

As a graduate in a Geophysics Engineering program, I spent ten years in advertising and sales, working with the public to promote products and achieve higher sales numbers each year. My husband and I had recently had a small child and we worked hard to provide for him the best life possible. Everything about our lives seemed perfectly normal and we had no reason to believe that anything about that was going to change. Unfortunately, reality would prove us wrong about our assumptions. In 2012, our life changed dramatically and in a way we never could have imagined.

In September of 2012, I was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare type of head and neck cancer. The doctor told me that I would be fine once treatment was completed but I would be incapable of speaking for approximately one year. The proclamation was alarming. I was still young. I had a four-year-old little boy. How could I be going through such a horrible chain of events?

Even still, I knew I had to do whatever it took and so I pushed myself through the treatments. It was a painful four months of surgery and radiotherapy. The problems, however, had only just begun. As the Doctor had warned, I couldn’t speak and was restricted to only drinking liquids. Without the ability to speak, I was no longer able to speak with customers and make sales. My career was over. This forced me to look for a new job model that would allow me to work without speech.

I began looking for a crafter who I could purchase leather samples and vintage kilims from. Finally in luck, I found one on the southern side of Turkey. I used those pieces to make a name for myself on a nationwide retail website; the perfect platform for an unprofessional seller. In this way, I was able to create my company, Galen Leather, named after a precious stone I remembered from my earlier education.

Slowly my business began to grow. Since I was able to communicate with customers via email, I didn’t need to worry about the fact that I couldn’t talk. Even still, I knew the business needed something more in order to succeed.

At this same time, my brother, Yusuf, had just graduated from an Economics program and was looking for a job. But he too was not interested in a traditional 9-5 job. So he started taking pictures for me, creating the most beautiful images to display the leather goods and pillows we sold.

For the next year we were able to slowly increase our business. During the 2013 Christmas season, we experienced an unexpected spike in orders. Contrary to what you might think, this actually threatened to end our entire company. Our vendor was not able to meet the demand and we were unsure if we would be able to keep going. Thankfully, we managed to pull through and keep our customers happy. Following this, our business returned to a semblance of normal until my husband asked for a leather journal for his Moleskine notebook and iPad. When I requested this from our vendor, he was not interested in helping and I knew we had to make some changes.

Yusuf and I decided to start producing our own leather goods. We started taking classes to learn leather crafting, learning from some of the best leather crafters in the area, as well as YouTube videos. It took several tries to create exactly what my husband had been looking for but we finally managed it, much to his satisfaction. Naturally, I was pretty ecstatic too! I was so proud of myself for what we had accomplished that I continued creating more and more things. Yusuf and I were able to create tech accessories and other specialty products. Everything was laser cut and stitched by hand. The business took off.

In 2015, however, we decided to make even bigger changes; relaunching the online store under our own branding. We also formed partnership agreements with shipping companies including UPS and FedEx, which would allow us to ship our products worldwide. This enabled us to focus on creating new things.

Today, I am healthy and have been able to return to my normal life. I can speak again and my husband, our four-year-old son, Cagan, and I are able to survive on the revenue from this company. Each day I am grateful for this life and I’ve never stopped experimenting and looking for ways to create new leather products that our customers will be interested in.

We continue to provide high quality and beautiful products to our customers. With all the products being handmade, they are unique amongst themselves, meaning that each product is a creative work of art that our customers can show off to their family and friends. Our beautiful products are our pride and joy and it warms our hearts to know that when we create something new, you, in turn, will come to love them as well.

Sadly, Zeynep passed away in July 2019. There are some people that you have never met who make such an impression upon you that you are devastated if something happens to them. Zeynep was one of them. I miss her terribly.  Which is hard not to do because I use her beautiful covers all the time and I think of her when I look at them. But her brother (Yusuf) and husband, Yunus, are lovingly carrying on her legacy and devotion to beautiful, quality handmade products. They continue to produce outstanding products, mention Zeynep often, and I fully believe that she will live on in their work, as well as in her son, Cagan.

Zeynep’s last words: I lived a very happy life, even when I was sick. Living a life with a certain maturity has made every moment very valuable. In this period, I entered the worlds of people who made me happy. I put a lot of stuff into my short life. I read too much. The community became my biggest supporter, my therapy. I appreciate everyone who touched my life. I’m going to a peaceful eternity.

Galen Leather is a company that continues to innovate and develop their products, while never losing sight of the essence of their brand. Their packaging is second to none, and is totally true to the spirit of their products. Their website is lovely and they maintain personal interaction with customers and fans on their social media.

I was recently sent some products from Galen, which I am so happy to be able to review.

The first is an A6 Tomoe River notebook in Crazy Horse Forest Green.

This packaging is glorious and there is a little tag you pull to open this box. Find this notebook here

First look at A6 Tomoe River Leather Notebook in Crazy Horse Forest Green. This box is great because it is strong enough to use to hold your notebook in your bag etc. It opens with a little tug on the ribbon tag and closes with a satisfying snap.
Also packed into the little box are lined and grid guide sheets and a leather blotter.
This leather is gorgeous! I usually go for undyed, brown and black, but dark blues and greens are alway spectacular, and very underrated I think. Find it here

This notebook has 400 pages, but because the paper is only 52gsm, this notebook is not thick or heavy. The notebook has sewn binding and the cover lies flat.

I also received two fountain pens. One to review and one as a gift. I will be doing some pen tests with these pens in the coming weeks. I was gifted the Galen X Kaweco sport which I am delighted about because I have always wanted a Kaweco Sport. I chose the colour of the SCRIKSS Fountain pen 419, but it was hard as there were so many lovely colours to choose from. I also really liked the white!

Once again, gorgeous packaging which captures the Galen spirit perfectly. I really love the packaging – it leads thoughts to a bygone era of copperplate handwriting and big bound books.

Really sturdy boxes, which I intend to use to hold pens, leads, erasers etc once the pens are in use.

Tiny little Galen pouch which is already holding my jewellery

And the famous Galen boxes. When I ordered my first Galen product, it was such a good surprise to get this amazing box!

The workmanship is, as always, perfect. My husband is a leathercraft nerd and he had a long look at it, admiring the workmanship.
