How many can you do?

I can

  • sew on a button
  • deal with a blown fuse
  • darn a hole (I used to spend Sundays darning my father’s socks!)
  • shorten a hem
  • check tyre pressure
  • sharpen a knife
  • do a hospital corner
  • iron a shirt
  • empty a vacuum bag
  • unblock a drain
  • defrost a fridge

and I can also

  • change a car tyre
  • change an electric plug
  • replace a tap washer
  • calculate things in my head
  • write well by hand
  • read a map
  • use a slide rule and 4 figure log tables

Are there any skills that you can think of that fewer people can do these days?

  1. I think that one of the things youngsters can’t do is put their smartphones down, look you in the eye and chat, not all but an uncomfortable number. As for the list, how can you call yourself an adult unless you can do at least the majority of these things.

  2. “Are there any skills that you can think of that fewer people can do these days?”

    Write and speak coherently.
