I’m with Miss Espresso. Sad…so sad. I turn into the Tasmanian Devil when I see this kind of thing, and it drives me BATTY when I see these mistakes on national television ads. It happens more and more often. People can’t speak properly anymore, or write properly. And, here in the U.S., they turn in applications they can’t fill out correctly, mumble their way through interviews, then demand top dollar for slinging burgers and shoveling fries, doing jobs that were never intended to support families. I’ve done my share of hash-slinging, too, but it was to pay my way through school. The kind of sloppiness on the packages you find, and the ads on TV seem so unrelated to the sloppiness with which people go through their lives, but my feeble brain is creating a thread from the former to the latter. Or is it the other way around? Quick, someone tell me to shut up!
Perhaps it was an inside joke for the teachers. In the lines of, “your students will never use proper grammar again, so you’ll have to squeeze me until I break down to ‘relief’ your stress”.
All this madness makes me mad.I see people write so many unforgivable mistakes everyday. If you care enough to correct them you are branded as “grammar-Nazi” (which is an offensive term in so many levels anyway). Now, I’m dyslexic, English is my third language, I was self-taught and I wasn’t a good student at school. If **I** can spot these mistakes, surely that means they are serious, and a native English speaker should never had made them. Then again I see the same thing happening in my native language. I’d blame technology, but that’s unfair, because people in their forties have been using computers and the Internet all of their adult lives, and they don’t make such mistakes, at least not as consistently. But it’s sad, isn’t it? It’s almost like it’s cool the world is getting less literate.
