  1. Just another thought but weren’t they the pencils that you had to lick to get them to write? I remember my granddad doing just that, habitually, with a short pencil he kept in his waistcoat pocket. I seem to remember that the resulting writing was purple in colour, and so was the tip of his tongue! The writing was quite permanent, more like ink than today’s pencil, so maybe that’s why?
