Loving the sea

I love the sea. I grew up on the eastern coast of Southern Africa (the Indian Ocean), one of the best surfing areas in the world.

I spent so much time swimming, running along the beach, lying in the sun, and going to sleep with the sound of waves on the shore in my ears, that I think my love of the sea goes right to my bones.

Whenever life gets too much for me, some time looking at the permanence and eternal rhythm of waves breaking on a white sandy beach put things into perspective for me, calms me and give me peace.

I am so glad I live on the shores of a huge inland sea in Sweden. It is not quite the same as the white beaches and blue sea in Africa but at least I am near the water.

I am not a fan of swimming out of my depth in the sea because of sharks and other things, but it endlessly fascinates me. We know more about space than we do about the sea. It makes up most of our planet but we have never fully explored it.

You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
Mahatma Gandhi

There’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away.
Sarah Kay

How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when it is clearly Ocean.
Arthur C. Clarke

The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea.
Isak Dinesen

The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach. Henry Beston

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.
Mother Teresa

Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone.

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.
Jacques Cousteau

When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise, and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused.
Rainer Maria Rilke

Why do we love the sea? It is because it has some potent power to make us think things we like to think.
Robert Henri

The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace.
Kate Chopin

The sea is as near as we come to another world.
Anne Stevenson

Eternity begins and ends with the ocean’s tides.

  1. I also grew up near the ocean (Atlantic, in the South West of France) and I miss it dearly. Whenever I go back home, being back near the ocean makes me feel grounded. A couple of years ago, I felt very depressed, for no real reason. Everything was going smoothly in my life (love, work, family) but I just wasn’t feeling it. We finally went on holiday (by the sea, Mediterranean) and I immediately felt better. My husband grew up in the countryside and he doesn’t understand this feeling. I guess it’s a relationship like no other.
