My day yesterday

I travelled to work on Alice. I like that the Stockholm Underground names the carriages. Some of the names are famous people, others are regular commuters.

I then had a cancellation, so I decided to do something I don’t often do, and wander around Gamla Stan, the Old Town.

Stockholm is built on 14 islands and Gamla Stan (or Old Town), dating from the 13th century, is a densely built island with tiny (some less than a metre wide) cobbled streets between medieval buildings.

It is particularly pretty at Christmas time when all the shops are decorated for Christmas. Coming from the Southern Hemisphere as I do, and having grown up with very hot Christmases at the beach, I love the traditional Christmas near the North Pole, with snow and Santa and reindeer. It is by far my most favourite time in Sweden.

A pretty Christmas doorway. In Sweden the drainpipes are either heated (so that water inside them does not freeze) or they have a piece of metal running all the way down and out the end so that you can wiggle it around to break up any ice that has frozen inside the pipe.

The Christmas market is really pretty, particularly when it is dark. It was light when I was there today, and no snow but still gorgeous!

This store is lovely - the craftsmen come from Lapland and make beautiful traditional items.

And what it looks like after 2pm when it is dark

  1. What a charming place to live! Maybe someday I can experience it in person. I adore that curved light that ends in a circle of lit stars. Is that a Christmas decoration or is it there all the time? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the cold state of Michigan, USA.

  2. Thank you very much for these photos Janet. It’s so lovely to see such peaceful street scenes in real life. In England we only see dark Swedish detective series (pretty much every Saturday evening through the year on one of the BBC channels), and it gives such a depressing and frightening view of your cities. Your post has cheered me up no end.

  3. Janet, this looks really beautiful! It reminds me a lot of Germany. Thank you for all the beautiful posts you have shared through the year. I have become quite addicted to your blog. I would like to wish you a merry Christmas and a very happy New Year and I cannot wait to read your future posts!
