The EU Flag

The EU flag has

  • a blue background symbolising the sky
  • twelve stars symbolising perfection and unity
  • a circle symbolising union

It was chosen in 1955 and has been used since 1986. Although the EU did have 12 member states in 1986, the number of stars has never had anything to do with the number of states in the EU.

  1. Thank you very much for the clarification, I like many thought the 12 stars symbolised the member states. I’m a Bahamian who relocated to the UK, Scotland to be exact 😉 But my husband is European from Belgium.

    1. I think most people think that it symbolises the member states. Not sure where that belief came from – perhaps when the EU had 12 member states?
