Swedes and IKEA

Swedes find it very funny that I can tie a tie way better and faster than any man they have ever known – without even looking at it. It comes from 12 years of wearing a school uniform that had a tie.

I find it really funny how Swedes all know how to assemble IKEA furniture! They are so good at it and so fast. I am sure they can build a Billy Bookcase before they can walk!

  1. While reading this, I realised that I’ve known how to tie a tie for so long that it has become automatic – I was trying to think through the sequence to tie a Windsor or half-Windsor knot and realised that I couldn’t remember it, even though the last time I needed to wear a tie I know I did it without needing to think about it!

    (I’m pretty good with IKEA furniture too… 🙂 )

  2. Really?? Where l work men have to wear a suit and a tie so thankfully ladies don’t need to help them! I find it strange though that a man can’t tie a tie properly. It is not that difficult and surely they could learn!

    1. Sweden is very relaxed at work, even in politics. They tend to dress down for work and up for parties whereas Anglo-Saxons dress up for work and down for parties! And of course there are no school uniforms so unless you have had practise, tying a good tie is not always easy.

      1. True! And don’t tell me about the Anglo-Saxons and their (bad) dress-code !!! 😉

  3. I love that picture. Thanks, Janet!

Just a question: do you happen to tie ties very often? Because honestly since my school years -in the late 80s- l must have tied about ten ties all together. It has ran out of fashion for ladies and thankfully my man can tie his tie himself (a man who can’t tie his tie or properly lace his shoes has missed a great part of his education and it tells a lot about him).

    1. I tie them quite often, yes. It is usually men who ask me to help them. Swedes dress down for work so when they need to be formal it is often the tie that they cannot manage. They often have not had much practice!
