I am South African. I grew up around working Boerboels from the 1960s to the 1980s. At that time they were not a registered breed but ‘just’ plain old working farm dogs. By the 1980s they were at risk of dying out and being forgotten forever. In the 1980s, due to the efforts of a few dedicated people, the breed was then researched and registered. This involved much travelling all over South Africa and seeing and appraising many many dogs, of which some were then entered into the original register, as foundation Boerboels. We all felt that becoming a ‘proper breed’ was going to ensure the future of the Boerboel.
Unfortunately as the breed became popular all over the world, unscrupulous, inexperienced and greedy breeders once again threw the breed as I know it, into danger of disappearing. Many of the dogs being sold as ‘working’ Boerboels have never worked a day in their life, and have lived cooped up in kennels. Even some of the ones who do not live in kennels are so enormous or weak-pasterned that you cannot imagine them working a farm all day. And indeed, many people buying these dogs often do not understand the breed and their very special guarding and protective instincts.
That is why people like Miriam Koopen are so special to me. She has known first-hand the Boerboel greats and the heritage of the breed, and her Boerboels are wonderful. Just looking at her photographs of her carefully bred dogs running free makes my heart sing. When you see photos of the great Boerboels interacting with Miriam you can see how they took to her immediately because they knew she understood them.
