  1. I work as a speech-language pathologist in a private clinic. The mother of one of my clients and I had a disagreement as to the correct number of phonemes in the word “car” – I said there are three, but she insisted that there are just two, based on the combination of the ‘a’ and ‘r’ as one sound. Please share with me how you would transcribe the word with the IPA. Thank you.

  2. Some of the information presented above is incorrect. In the first chart it states that diphthongs are voiced and the monophthongs are unvoiced. this is wrong. Also there is no reference to which consonants are voiced or unvoiced.

    Ok, THe chart is just confusing, I can see now that it is showing the correct voicing, however i would suggest using a different shading of gray on the monothongs
